I bought the Blurays of Season 4 recently and I've spent much of this weekend back in Westworld. Having already watched the latest/last season twice on HBO Max earlier this year, there were obviously no mind-fucks or mazes left for me on the 3-disc set, but the outstanding production quality of Westworld, the beautiful locations, the great dialogue and the fantastic actors are always worth plenty of revisits.
I am one of the apparently few who didn't dislike Season 3. In fact, I thought it was pretty good. Not as great as Season 1 and 2, but still very entertaining and very different. I love Season 4 too. I like how they've turned it all around, and the humans have now become the new hosts/slaves being fucked over by the AI Hosts. The locations are beautiful and it's fantastic to see so many old faces back in the cast.
Some of the faces we see in Season 4 include: Dolores(Christina), Bernard, William, Maeve, Halores, Teddy, Stubbs, Clementine, Caleb, and also introducing Caleb's daughter: Frankie(C). A cool thing about Westworld is that nobody is rarely truly dead. You can usually bring them back as a copy or a variant. This gives a lot of options for the writers.
After "Game of Thrones" slowly derailed after Season 4 and ended up smashing itself into a mountain wall with the last 2 seasons, Westworld had become my trusty go-to show. A show that never dumbed itself down and never just gave the common viewers what they wanted.
It took an effort to enjoy Westworld. You'd have to watch the first 2 Seasons several times to fully grasp all the mind-fucks, parallel time-lines and twists to fully understand the beauty of it all. Hell, you may even have had to read some background interviews or community posts to get all the way there.
I guess that this was too much to ask of the common viewer, who needs to be able to communicate on their phone, eat their dinner and pet their dog/child at the same time. You can't do that while watching Westworld. You need to focus and pay attention. Only if you do so, you will be able to get the rewards and fully enjoy the show.
Sadly, HBO Max is on the way to become merged with Discovery Plus and you can already see were this is going. HBO Max is going to degenerate into a pile of shit. As a result of this, HBO Max did NOT renew Westworld for it's final season. There will be no Season 5, even though the show fully deserves it. Rumor has it that they even plan to remove Westworld from the platform, so you better hang on to your Blurays. Season 4 was great, and a show of this size and quality that has run for this long, deserves to have the ending, creators Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan had planned from the beginning in 2016. We fans have every right to be super pissed off that we won't be getting the final season.
Season 4 ends in a way that is not terrible for the viewer, as it doesn't end on a major cliff-hanger. It is however clear that Dolores has one final test to perform in The Sublime, to see if there is any hope left for humankind and the AI Hosts, or if they have destroyed themselves for good.
I really hope that some other platform gets the chance to end the story. A couple of full-length Movies could also be an option. Hell, I'd even settle for a graphic novel, just to get the full story. Time will tell if this is really the end for Westworld or if Dolores and co. will return in some new form or another. At least this still seems a lot more likely to happen than GRRM ever finishing the next book in the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series, or Robert Smith getting the next The Cure album released.
There is some bonus content on the Blurays: featurettes on episodes and production, including interviews with creators, cast and technicians.
