"Wednesday (Season 2)", Streaming, [2025]

I really liked the first season of Wednesday. Season 2 is much more of the same. Sometimes less is more, but that is not how they have approached this season. You will get a lot more of everything. A lot of great stuff and a lot that really isn't. There are many storylines and mysteries: one-eyed kamikaze crows, a brain eating zombie, monster Hydes, fraud attempts by the use of Siren, secret experiments on outcasts in an asylum. This and much more. Much to keep track of and lots of characters involved.

What still works fantastic is Wednesday [Jenna Ortega] herself. Wednesday with Enid [Emma Myers], Wednesday with her mother [Catherine Zeta-Jones], Wednesday with her grandmama [Joanna Lumley], Wednesday with her new spirit guide, Wednesday with her father [Luis Guzmán], even Wednesday with her brother [Isaac Ordonez]. Why do they have to involve so many of these other characters and let them have much too long screentime?

Enid is super annoying for the first half of the show. In the second half her part is much better written. Why sideline Enid for so long when she was such a great part of the first season? Agnes [Evie Templeton] is an invisible super-fan of Wednesday. She is a great addition and fun to follow. With Enid somewhat sidelined, Agnes saves the day for the show.

I don't think the writers were particularly creative this season. The whole Hyde family story is rather boring. I had preferred they had just kept the Hydes locked up at Willow Hill asylum. No need to keep that boring storyline alive any longer. We also get a "Thing" origin story. It worked somewhat better than the Hyde-show. Sadly, it also involved a lot of Pugsley screentime. And let's face it: Pugsley sucks. With or without his new emotional support Zombie.

"My premonition has changed: Enid no longer dies. One of us does. An Addams. I'd like to sacrifice Pugsley."

Yeah, me too, Wednesday. Me too.

The new Principal of Nevermore Academy, Dort [Steve Buscemi], is super annoying. His interaction with the Sirens get much too much screentime. I don't give a fuck about Sirens. They are boring. Enough with the Morning Song crap. Bury it somewhere.

I have watched this Season twice. Mostly because of Netflix's new release strategy (see below), but also to see if I'd like it better the second time. In fact I did. The show has replay value. They didn't nail it completely this time like they did with the first season. They did however manage to keep it interesting and keep it together. I'll be back for more in Season 3. Let's hope they focus on what is great and skip some of the storylines and characters that aren't.

Netflix and their lame new launch strategy:

Netflix's new launch strategy stinks. The show is being split and then released with a month between the first 4 episodes and the last 4 episodes. You binge the first 4 episodes, and wait for a month. When the last episodes get released, you have forgotten all the details from the first episodes. Either release them 1 episodes per week or release all of them at once. This new strategy will only make me wait until all episodes have been released, and Netflix won't have gained anything.
