"Weapons", Cinema, [2025]

A horror movie with a runtime of over 2 hours, that doesn't bore me, is a rarity. This one didn't. I wasn't even sure if I wanted to watch it in the cinema, because I couldn't figure out from the reviews, if it was a stupid comedy or a horror movie. Well, it turns out it is mostly a horror movie with a supernatural touch and some rather funny scenes too. It never gets stupid though and the focus remains on horror and mystery. Oh, there is a bit of gore too.

I won't say much about the plot, the less you know the better. An entire school class disappears at night from their homes. Apparently they just decided to run away on their own at 02:17. Next day only one single boy, Alex [Cary Christopher], shows up at school, but neither he or his teacher, Justine [Julia Garner], can tell the police much.

The movie follows a lot of characters, one after another, as we see a certain timeline from their point of view: Justine, Alex, a police officer, the school's principal, a junkie, a father of one of the missing children. All these parallel timelines terminate at the same point, and the mystery unfolds as the movie moves towards its finale. You may decide to read some allegories for the aftermath of school shootings into the story. Or you can give a fuck. I'm mostly in the second category.

I found the way the story was told really entertaining, as you gradually got more and more answers to the mystery. The cast all do a good job and the camera work is brilliant, especially near the end. The movie looks great on the big IMax screen.
