W.A.S.P. @ Amager Bio, Copenhagen, 2025-10-06

I never really connected with W.A.S.P. back in the 1980s. I was too busy with Iron Maiden and Motörhead back then. I have however been listening to their older records quite a lot in recent years, particularly fueled by "The 7 Savage [1984-1992]" boxset.

I have seen W.A.S.P. live 2 times before this 2025 gig. In 2004 at this very same venue and also in 2010 at the Wacken Open Air festival in Germany. They did well both times, so I knew they were able to deliver live. They sadly cancelled last time they were to play Copenhagen a few years ago, but this time the gig went ahead as planned. The big question was: are they still in good live shape after all these years? None of us are getting any younger.

Let me just assure you they are still in fine form. Blackie Lawless is still able to sing with his usual high pitched voice and the rest of the band kick ass too. They plowed their way through the first W.A.S.P. album from beginning to end, only interrupted by a few monologues by Blackie, explaining how this tour came to be and how decisions were made.

I am not really sure this 1984 debut album is to be considered a masterpiece from beginning to end though. I would say that almost half of the songs are below par, but it was still a good ride. Nothing bad as such, it's just that some of the songs are miles better than others. Amager Bio was almost sold out this Monday evening and we were treated with a trip down memory lane - W.A.S.P. style.

"I Wanna Be Somebody" and "L.O.V.E. Machine" made a brilliant start. I was able to recite the entire "I pledge allegiance..." intro to "School Daze". "Hellion" was certainly kick-ass too. "Sleeping (in the Fire)" was a total highlight. I had doubted if Blackie would be able to deliver it live, but for no reason. He sang it perfectly and it is one hell of a ballad. The long guitar solo only made it better.

The last 3 songs on the album is really nothing special. I would very much have preferred to hear the top quality single "Animal (F**k Like A Beast)" and the flip-side "Show No Mercy" instead.

After a short break they did a great encore of older songs. Some of them were delivered in medley form and it was all brilliant. Blackie once again really impressed vocally with a solo intro to "Wild Child" until the full band kicked in later. "Blind in Texas" sent us back home with a 1 hour 20 minutes mission completed smile on our faces. It had been a great evening in good company. We Are Sexual Perverts. Or something.
