The Revenant [2016]

The wild cold nature is the scenery in this "Western", which tells a simple revenge story.

Fur hunters gets attacked by Indians and they must run for their lives and try to make it back to their Fort on foot. Our main character Hugh Glass [Leonardo DiCaprio] later gets attacked by a bear, while he is alone ahead of the group, and even though he manages to kill the bear, he is very badly hurt.

The other men find him half-dead, but as winter is approaching, they have to leave him behind with 3 guards to take care of him and bury him if/when he dies. One of them is Glass' son, another is a greedy bastard named John Fitzgerald [Tom Hardy]. Fitzgerald tries to strangle Glass and ends up stabbing the son to death instead. Glass is left partially buried alive and sure to die alone in the cold.

Of course Glass doesn't die, and the rest of the movie is about Glass trying to make his way back to the civilization, against all odds, to get his well-deserved revenge for the murder of his son. It is a very tough and brutal movie, but it is also incredibly beautifully filmed. It is a joy to witness such awesome pictures and sound in a top-class cinema. Leonardo DiCaprio is excellent in his role, and you totally believe him, when he said it was tougher than Hell to get thru the filming. It all looks mighty real.

It is however a very long movie. The story is simple and even though I wouldn't say it is boring, it does feel very long, and I did check my watch a few times. There are some brilliantly done action scenes along the way, that are sure to make you drop your jaw, but 2 and a half hours is simply too long, no matter how stunning it all looks.

It's probably not a movie I'd want to re-watch again later, but I'm certainly glad I saw it in a top-class cinema, where it deserves to be seen.
