The Raveonettes - "Rarities and B-sides", LP, [2011] [Record Review]

The Raveonettes - Rarities and B-sides

This collection of rare stuff and b-sides was limited to only 500 copies on CD and vinyl. I was a bit too slow to get the cd, but luckily enough, there was still vinyl left. It is in fact 2 quality 180g vinyl records and it sounds really great. I've transferred it to digital for easy playback and the sound is very good.

I am no The Raveonettes expert and not really a fan either, but I guess I'm slowly moving towards liking their music well. I loved their last album Raven In The Grave and I decided to give this collection a try, something I haven't regret.

It is a very fine collection that moves thru various periods of The Raveonettes songwriting - or so I've read. Well, actually it is easy to hear.

The early songs are distorted and with a spartan feel, "Experiment in Black" and "Evil L.A. Girls" are good examples. Later you hear "Bubblegum", "Get Lost", "Vamp, Scratch, Whore" which are really melodic and the first vinyl disc ends nicely with the x-mas classic "The Christmas Song".

"Oh, The Time" begins a collection of rather acoustic stuff, while "Love On Barbed Wire" and the songs that follow bring back that familiar The Raveonettes distortion.

This album is a great collection and the quality of the songs are very high for a collection of b-sides and rarities. Personally I prefer the first vinyl disc and the last songs on the album. I think The Raveonettes sound best when they are distorted and black.
