The Cure - "Hypnagogic States", EP, [2008] [Record Review]

The Cure - Hypnagogic States (EP)

This one is a remix EP containing remixes of all four single A-sides from the forthcoming album. The album should be out on October 13 and should be entitled 4:13 Dream.

  • The Only One is actually more interesting than the single version. Something about the mix makes it a better song. It's still not a top-class The Cure song, but still it sounds better than the single. Remixed by "30 Seconds To Mars".
  • Freakshow was an excellent single release, and this one is not quite as brilliant. This is a techno mix with a pumping drumbeat, and it kinda spoils much of the fun. Guess it could be okay for a party...but I would pick the single version any day. Remixed by "Jade Puget - (AFI)"
  • Sleep When I'm Dead is a damn good song, and this mix is also quite good. I think it is just as good as the single version, and so it must be almost perfect. Remixed by "Gerard Way - (MCR) And Julien- K".
  • The Perfect Boy wasn't exactly perfect as a single. The song isn't quite good enough, and I guess this remix isn't much better. But all in all it sounds okay. Remixed by "Pete Wentz And Patrick Stump - (FOB)"
  • Exploding Head Syndrome runs for 21:26 and has been remixed by "65 Days Of Static", the band that opened for The Cure on their European Tour in the spring of 2008. I didn't like them then, and I don't fancy this remix much either. It contains all four singles in it, but most of the vocals by Robert Smith have been distorted, and it gets annoying quite early on. If you like your remixes noisy and distorted, you may like this one. It's not that I hate it, because some of it is interesting enough, but it just doesn't sound like I like and love The Cure to sound.

At the end of the day this is not a bad remix EP. With a total playing time of 37:06 you certainly get some value for your money.
