This is said to be the last chapter in "The Conjuring" franchise. It is mostly a Warren family portrait with some added horror elements. We follow a young version of The Warrens in 1964 when they encounter a demonic mirror. When Lorraine [Vera Farmiga] touches the mirror it almost costs the life of her unborn daughter. Ed [Patrick Wilson] has to rush her to a hospital. Of course we already know that baby Judy didn't die, so nothing much is at stake here.
The rest of the movie takes place in 1986. We get to follow an older version of The Warrens and we also follow their daughter, Judy [Mia Tomlinson] and her boyfriend, Tony [Ben Hardy]. The story jumps back and forth between The Warrens, and The Smurls family in Pennsylvania. The Smurls happen to be the unhappy owners of a certain demonic mirror.
The Warrens are technically retired from ghostbusting these days, so will they decide to help the desperate Smurl family?
The acting is fine from the entire cast. What is lacking is a good storyline. When you go and see a "The Conjuring" movie, you don't want most of it to be a family portrait. You want to see nasty demons and possessions and scary stuff. This is where you'll be disappointed with this movie. Most of the sparse demonic stuff is unsatisfying and underwhelming.
Perhaps the movie isn't exactly boring, but it comes close. I had to check my watch several times during the much too long runtime of 135 minutes.
Michael Chaves has made yet another movie in "The Conjuring" franchise, and once again he has failed making a great movie. It is the weakest of all 4 "The Conjuring" movies. I'm not sure if I can find a good reason to add this movie to my Blu-ray collection.
