I loved Milly Alcock in the first season of HBO's "House of the Dragon" [2022]. I never had any doubt she'd be a great Supergirl no matter how many retarded internet trolls tried to claim otherwise in the months leading up to the release date. Supergirl is her movie, she is a great actress and I think she is really hot too. If everything and everyone else had been as great as Milly then this would have been a fantastic movie. Unfortunately that is not the case.
Supergirl teams up with a young girl, Ruthye [Eve Ridley], who wants revenge for the murder of her family. Their murderer is a member of the Brigands, named Krem [Matthias Schoenaerts]. He is kidnapping women and girls to repopulate his world and he and his men are some evil bastards. Somewhere along the way an alien bounty hunter on a motorbike joins the girls on the hunt, his name is Lobo [Jason Momoa].
In many ways Supergirl is a traditional superhero movie and I'm not really a big fan of traditional superhero movies. It has the usual CGI overload, but at least it looks a bit like a Star Wars universe. It would have benefited a lot from being R-rated and ultra-violent, but it isn't. Ruthye should have been played by a better actress, who can actually act. The new Superman [David Corenswet] is dull and boring, luckily he doesn't play a big part in this Supergirl movie. The flashbacks to Supergirl's days on Krypton feel a bit attached and could have been executed better. Lastly, they should have skipped the moral bullshit near the end.
What works well is much of the humor and Milly Alcock is excellent as Supergirl, who starts out as a drunken party-girl, who just wants to get drunk and hang out with her super-dog, Krypto. She does end up finding a purpose, fighting bad guys and protecting the innocent, but I think she was hotter and funnier when she was a drunk party-girl.
Supergirl is not the worst superhero movie I've seen, and it's miles better than the awful "Superman" [2025] movie. It's really just a shame that they didn't manage to make a better movie out of Supergirl with Milly Alcock's talent. It's not her fault though. She did what she could with what they gave her. Too bad they didn't get some better writers and went for a more ultra-violent movie. The cinema had air-condition and that alone made it worth it, escaping from the hot evil Sun for a few hours. Oh, Milly is hot too, but she is a good kind of hot.
