Stig Pedersen aka StiggeNasty of Danish rock band D-A-D (Disneyland After Dark) has just released his first solo album. Well, technically it is an EP but let's call it a mini-album then. Stig is known for playing 2-string bass in D-A-D and also has some vocal duties on some of the band's earlier songs.
Two of the songs had already hit us as 12" single releases: "Roadkill" and "(Just Like) Arcadia". Now we get 4 more songs added to the collection. All the songs on the EP have somehow inspired Stig through the years and it turns out to be an EP of mainly cover songs. "Mainly" because one of them is technically not a cover song. I sadly don't have the physical EP in my hands yet because of a combined cluster-fuck performed by iMusic and Postnord. Thank you so much, fucking not! Tidal to the rescue. Tidal also provided me all the original songs that is covered by Stig here, and it is always fun to hear how things sounded originally. I have learned that Stig & Co. have stayed quite loyal to the original songs.
Stig was being joined by a bunch of (mostly Danish) musicians to make this EP. I think they have managed to create a consistent piece of work that sounds like a connected mini-album and not just a random collection. Here are some/most/all of them: Peter Sandorff, Felix Ewert, Sune Rose Wagner, Kiko Sjöberg, Lars Top-Galia, Benny Pedersen, Frederik Schjermer, Marie Lousie Bjarnason, Ufo Mustonen.
EP opener "Who Do You Think We Are?" happens to be one of my all-time favourite songs from one of my all-time favorite albums from one of my all-time favorite artists, Alice Cooper. It is taken from his cocaine-fueled black-out period. Some people (me!) adore Alice's records from this period and other people don't really get them. It was how I was introduced to Alice Cooper and I have it from his own mouth that this is the only version of the character Alice Cooper that has ever scared himself. Stig does an okay job, but it is obviously impossible to reach cocaine-Alice heights/highs. Extra bonus points for recreating the 1980s keyboard intro and for making this gem known to a wider audience.
"Roadkill" is the only song that is not a cover song. It was written specifically for Stig by Kari Hokkanen of Stillborn. It is an effective rock song with a D-A-D humor touch to it. Bonus points for the fun idea of making a German version for the 12" flip-side.
"Do You Want Me On My Knees?" is a fine song by punk rock band The Nuns. I shamefully admit that I didn't really know much about them apart from their band name. After listening to this cover version and the original version, I plan to correct this lack of knowledge. I'll start by giving their album "4 days in a Motel Room" a spin. Stig does a great job with the song here, and it fits in nicely with the other songs.
"(Just Like) Arcadia" by Psychic TV. It didn't do much for me when I first heard it in its digital form, but when I got the 12" single, it all changed. Some songs were made for vinyl. I think it is a fine song and I think Stig handles it very nicely here.
"Someday, Somehow" is a song by Finnish rock band Hearthill and the last song "Take and Give" is a song by Slim Rhodes that dates all the way back to 1956. Stig's new EP spans a lot of genres but he manages to make it all connect while staying loyal to the original songs.
Stig is by far one of the most extreme and funniest rock 'n rollers in Danish rock. I had the honor of being at a talk session earlier this month where Stig and Jan Poulsen discussed some of the songs and bands that have inspired Stig in his career. Stig should write a book about some of his many stories. It would be the funniest rock book ever written.
Stig has managed to get the most out of this EP. A lot of hype was created with the two preceding 12" singles. I think it has been worth it. Great work, Stigge & Co.! I hope he'll be back sometime later with more music. Maybe even some new original music next time? I'm sure this EP will find plenty of playtime on my turntable in the years to come. If I ever actually receive it in the snail mail, that is... sigh
