Remember Episode VII where they more or less copied the entire plot from Episode IV ? In the beginning of this new episode you think that they are about to copy Episode V , which of course would have been lame. Instead they use a different strategy. They have a plot so thin that it almost isn't there. It's just one long ridiculous escape.
The characters are still the same: Action girl, Black guy and Emo dude. They are exactly as annoying and/or boring as they were in Episode VII. Now Asian girl is added to the group. She is on a sub plot mission with Black guy, and it is one pointless waste of screen time. Leia is so old that she looks like she could die at any point in the movie and Luke has been turned into a total wanker destroying everything we liked and knew about his former character. Poe Dameron [Oscar Isaac] as the X-Wing ace is an exception, he sucks way less than the rest of the cast.
The special effects are fine though, even in 2D, that's one point were it doesn't suck. But the pace of the movie is awful. It feels terribly long as it drags it's heavy plot-less ass along for 2 and a half hour. They could just have cut out the lame sub-plot with Black guy and Asian girl and have saved us half an hour that no-one would have missed.
They are trying so hard to make us feel anything for these characters and their internal relationships, but all I felt was: holy shit this is boring, can I go home soon? I'll probably watch the next Episode too whenever it comes out, but I'm pretty sure my love for all things Star Wars is about to die out. The prequels were actually a lot better than this crap. Jar Jar deserved an Oscar compared to this.
Here's my personal Star Wars Episodes ranking - best to worst:
- Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
- Episode IV: A New Hope
- Episode VI: Return of the Jedi
- Episode I: The Phantom Menace
- Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
- Episode II: Attack of the Clones
- Episode VII: The Force Awakens
- Episode VIII: The Last Jedi
