The cartoonish look and feel of this nasty city is still amazing. Everything is kept in black and white with the odd red, yellow or blue contrast thrown in on a dress or a woman's lips. The 3D effects are being put to great use here for once and it is actually worth checking out. This time you should go for 3D.
The story is pretty damn complicated at first until you figure out that this movie is as much a prequel as it is a sequel to the first Sin City movie. I watched the first movie again last evening, something I will strongly advice you do as well, because there is a lot of storylines from the first movie that are being expanded upon and obviously we meet a lot of the same characters as well. If you don't have the first movie fresh in memory, I think you'll feel lost here.
The movie is not as great as the first movie. It has a weird pace and slows down way too much along the way. That said, there's still some awesome scenes and very enjoyable ultra violence and it certainly calls for several replays on bluray later. The storylines are not as great as they were in the first movie and you can't help but wish that the Yellow Bastard or Kevin would pop in to spice things up a bit with a rotten stench. They don't.
Instead we get a lot of Ava Lord (Eva Green) and I really can't understand why Eva Green has become such a popular actress. In my opinion she is a lot better at flashing her tits than she is at acting. Well, she certainly does flash her tits a hell of a lot here, so well...maybe that answers my question?
Luckily the good old favorites Nancy (Jessica Alba) and Marv (Mickey Rourke) are still with us here. And no matter how much of a retarded fuck Marv would be in real life - he is one damn entertaining motherfucker on the big screen. I guess he is only being rivaled by Miho (Jamie Chung) with her Samurai sword and throwing stars. I just wish they had spent a little less time on some of the other less entertaining characters.
What to do then? You should go and see it! But only if you loved the first movie, otherwise there's no reason at all to see part 2. It ain't perfect, but even so, it is a blast of a fun ride that looks awesome in 3D in a good cinema.
