"Who the Hell goes to see Sigue Sigue Sputnik?" I was asked by a reporter at a gig in Camden back in 2003. Well, they could have asked the same question in Brighton at this Weekend's gig, "Who the Hell goes to see Sigue Sigue Sputnik Electronic?" and the answer would have been the same here in 2026. There is no other thing like Sigue Sigue Sputnik. They invented the Future. Would I have preferred the original line-up, absolutely. But when Tony and Neal don't wanna play with Martin anymore, it is fucking great that Martin wants to play without them.
It had been 14 long years since I'd last been to a Sputnik gig and I didn't know what to expect after all this time. I met up with the old gang at The Prince Albert pub, including Doc, Stu, Lyndon and JK. It was immediately like being back in year 2K+. The Sputnik Elite still rules O.K. Have no worries. We might be older and/or fatter, but we still ultra-violently love everything Sputnik. After a few beers we walked to the small venue, Green Door Store. It's a rather "raw" venue. They certainly don't spend a fortune on interior, fancy design or cleaning. They do sell beers though and they do have a stage. Everything was good. We were ready to let it Röck!
Support duo ULTRARABBIT did their electronic thing first. They are not my electronic thing, but it looked like Doc was having a great time.
After a short break the main act entered the small stage. The setlist consisted entirely of Sigue Sigue Sputnik tracks given the SSSE treatment. For this Brighton gig Martin Degville had brought Johann "Boo Boo" on Fx and Will Crewdson (also known from Adam Ant's live band) on stun-guitar. Having Will on guitar is a blessing for SSSE. Stun-guitar is an important part of the Sputnik live sound and Will did a great job even if the sound guy tried to sabotage his guitar sound now and then. It wouldn't be a Sputnik gig without some sort of sound issue though, would it?
Martin sang well and he looks great. He seemed happy to see us or just "scared" of the loud "Freako Psycho Horror Show" that Doc and I surely must sound like, when we sing along to the old legendary Sputnik tunes in the front row.
I sadly won't be able to attend the London gig in July, but those who are going will have a blast, I'm sure. It felt awesome being back at a Sputnik gig after 14 long years, and I'm very glad that I decided to visit Brighton this weekend. I needed that Sputnik fix and it was great seeing The Elite again. We all Röck!
