This new Star Wars spin-off takes place after "Episode III – Revenge of the Sith"[2005] but before "Episode IV - A New Hope"[1977].
The movie was a huge disappointment to me. The story is paper thin and the characters are completely uninteresting - including the main characters, Jyn Erso [Felicity Jones] and Cassian Andor [Diego Luna]. There is no chemistry between the way too many characters, and only the Imperial officers and the sarchastic robot K-2SO, can be pleased with their performance. Darth Vader and Princess Leia make a short appearance, but they don't impress much either.
The movie has a runtime of 2 hours and 14 minutes and it feels very long. The first 3/4 of the movie is totally uninspired, and when things finally get interesting in the battle to steal the plans for the Death Star, it is much too late. Yes, the last 1/4 is really satisfying and a nice Star Wars moment, but all that happen or rather doesn't happen - leading up to it - is a mighty waste of time.
I will rate this movie as the worst of the Star Wars movies so far. Yes, it is worse than any of the 3 "prequels", most of all because 75% of the movie is really boring. I guess that makes it much easier for the next movie "Episode VIII" to impress though. It has a planned 2017 release date.
Here's my personal Star Wars Episodes ranking - best to worst:
- Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
- Episode IV: A New Hope
- Episode VI: Return of the Jedi
- Episode I: The Phantom Menace
- Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
- Episode II: Attack of the Clones
- Episode VII: The Force Awakens
- Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
