Rob Zombie was back in town. Last time I saw him was at Copenhagen's Valby-Hallen, where he'd brought the big show with him. Vega is however a much smaller venue, so there was no room for all that. This could mean two things: either it would be a very intimate gig or one would feel like missing some of the fun action on stage with visuals and big ass robots. It turned out to be a bit of both.
Rob Zombie and his band were rocking and the man himself was certainly doing his best to entertain the crowd. They seemed to have fun on stage and joked and interacted with the crowd. Rob danced around on the platform trying his very best to out-do the likes of James Brown and Prince. He jumped off the stage and ran from side to side greeting the fans in the front-rows.
Rob Zombie has a lot of kick-ass party songs to choose from. I think he could have put together a better setlist, but songs like "Superbeast, Pussy Liquor, Never Gonna Stop, Dragula" will never fail to make you bang your head. They are simply just blasting party hits. They played several cover songs and even if "Sex Machine" was entertaining with Rob doing his dance routine, it felt a bit out of place. The old KISS classic "God of Thunder" was more appropriate and the Ramones punk-rocker "Blitzkrieg Bop" fit in nicely.
From the newest album "Venomous Rat Regeneration Vendor" we got 3 songs "Teenage Nosferatu Pussy, Dead City Radio..., Ging Gang Gong De Do..." and I had no complaints. It's actually a pretty good album. What I want to complain about is John 5's guitar solo. It went on forever, it went nowhere and it basically bored me to death. Earlier on in the show we also had a drum solo. Enough with the pointless solos, thank you.
Rob Zombie is a great showman, his band is great and he's got a lot of party rockers to kick our asses with. But it has to be said that the show works better on a bigger stage. It was nice to be very close to the band and see them rock out. But while many bands are better when you see them up close and intimate, I feel that Rob Zombie is actually better when he is backed by the full horror stage show. But big show or not, 1h30 in good company with Mr. Zombie and his band is always a fun night out.
