"Rebel Moon: Part One - A Child of Fire", Streaming, [2023]

Yes, this smells a lot like wanna-be Star Wars, but it doesn't smell bad. It is actually really entertaining. It has rather thin characters and dialogue, but the pace is excellent, the locations look great and it never gets boring. There are a lot of characters involved, but it is quite easy to follow the story.

Yes, Zack Snyder is deeply in love with slow motion sequences, and yes, every ethnicity checkbox has been checked, but if you just want some cool space opera action in a galaxy far far away (almost as far away as the Star Wars galaxy) then you'll find plenty of it here.

Part One is basically the story of how the evil "Motherworld" Empire, led by Atticus Noble [Ed Skrein] come to a peaceful planet and give the people there an offer they can't refuse. Shit hits the fan and soon our heroine, Kora "Arthelais" [Sofia Boutella], is on a quest to recruit a team of rebels, who can take up the fight against their oppressors.

I had no wild expectations for this movie and I liked what I got. I will certainly line-up in front of my TV-set when "Part Two - The Scargiver" gets released in April. Rumor has it that sometime later we'll get the longer un-cut R-rated versions with lots of added blood and sex, it is said to be almost Verhoeven-style. I certainly hope those rumors are true and hopefully that also means they'll get released on blu-ray.
