All good violent and bloody things come to those who wait on Netflix. Or something like that. Zack Snyder's Director's Cut versions of the Rebel Moon movies were released yesterday. I really liked them even in the PG-13 versions, so I have plowed my way through the 6+ hours of plowing in space with added blood, violence and sex.
So is it worth it? Yes and no. If you hated the PG-13 versions then you'll probably hate the R-rated versions too. It is basically the same story, only is it longer and with more explicit violence. If however you liked the butchered PG-13 versions and was annoyed with the obvious cuts that could easily be spotted all over the place then look no further. The Director's Cut fixes that and more. But it comes at a cost, they are very long. They are also too long.
The Director's Cut version has a lot of extended scenes and dialogue and also many new scenes. The story becomes bigger, easier to understand and it all makes more sense. Part 1 runs for 3 hours and 24 minutes, while part 2 clocks in at 2 hours and 53 minutes. Of course it is allowed to take one or more breaks along the way. You'll probably need it.
Are they violent then? Yes. Now we get to see limbs cut off, smashed or exploding skulls, there's blood and executions. We get to see 2 fairly long sex scenes (with boobs) and the dialogue has also been sharpened. The blood is very clearly CGI created and I suppose it was an artistic choice. I don't mind it, but some people will probably hate it.
Part 2 still has that slow burning start, where the first hour is mostly wheat farming 1-2-3 in space, with a few refreshing cuts to the "Motherworld" space-craft. Love it, live with it, or hate it.
I hope that Zack Snyder gets the chance to create more movies based in this Rebel Moon universe. It may not be super-deep movies, but there are still a lot of events and stories that we have only seen hints of and I would like to see and learn more about it all. It may be wanna-be Star Wars, but I do find it entertaining and visually pleasing and it is a lot better than the crap Disney shits out these days.
I am ready for more Rebel Moon. I am also ready for a 4K bluray release of these movies. I really think they deserve it!
