This sequel to the very entertaining "Ready or Not" [2019] picks up right where the first movie ended. Grace [Samara Weaving] has defeated the exploding family of Satan worshippers she had unknowingly married into, and she sits on the stairs outside the burning mansion. She soon finds herself handcuffed to a hospital bed charged with murder. Her story is a bit hard to believe, hide and seek and exploding in-laws? Come on...
Soon Grace gets united with her lost sister Faith [Kathryn Newton], and a few minutes later the two of them find themselves playing the next round of Satanic hide and seek. This time they have to play against 5 families and the winner takes it all. The winner literally gets to control the whole World. The sisters aren't really given a choice. They have to play or die.
It is a great thing that Samara is back in her role as Grace. It is also great that the directors are the same. This ensures continuity and that the universe feels the same even if it is expanded quite a bit. The relationship between the sisters work well and is believable and full of funny lines and situations. The movie has a lot of humor and it never gets old seeing the Satan worshippers explode after they break some rule of the game. The Lawyer [Elijah Wood] makes sure the game is being played by the rules.
I think the filmmakers should have aimed at 90 minutes instead of the 108 minutes we get. The pace is a bit uneven and it drops too much at times. The first movie was tighter and it never slowed down or lost focus.
The villains aren't of the same quality as in the first movie, but they still provide some entertainment. The 2 most important villains are Ursula Danforth [Sarah Michelle Gellar] and her twin-brother Titus Danforth [Shawn Hatosy]. The rest of them are really just walking meat and jokes on legs. It does however annoy me in this type of movies when the heroines don't finish off the bad guys when they have the chance to off them. Also you just know they will never kill a kid, no matter how fucked up in the head the kid is.
Was this sequel really necessary? No, the first movie works really well as it is without a sequel. That said, this movie has its moments and it's not a bad sequel.
After the movie's bloody ending is it possible to make a third movie? Certainly, but again I don't think we really need it. I guess the profit of "Ready or Not 2: Here I Come" will decide if we get a third movie or not.
