Pixels [2015]

This is a comedy about aliens invading the Earth in the form of energy lifeforms taking the shape of arcade computer game characters. I kinda like the idea, and thought it could have been used to create a funny movie. Unfortunately it is this typical Hollywood auto-pilot comedy soup that makes you smile once in a while, but it's never breaking any rules or going anyplace that would disturb anybody. I guess I was just fooling myself, hoping this wouldn't be the case.

Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Josh Gad are the gaming nerds taking care of all the clichés. Michelle Monaghan ensures that there can be the mandatory love story. There are lots of annoying kids who can't act. There are the typical dumbass army officers.

Peter Dinklage has the "privilege" of being the first arcade gamer ever to use cheat codes on original arcade machines. How the fuck did he do that, when the games came on ROM chips that were installed on the hardware inside the machines? Did he transfer the cheat codes from the inside of his sunglasses to the Read Only Memory by using his mental powers?

The people who wrote this shit in their lunch break should be spanked with a wet centipede. And when they only used the most classic video game characters, it kinda shows that the film makers were never arcade gamers with a true passion or understanding of this awesome time period.

Nope, I can't recommend this one. The idea certainly had potential, but the execution and the limited imagination trapped in a much too limited comedy soup template never really worked out to a satisfactory level. I really wanted to like it, but I just can't.
