Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - "Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!", CD, [2008] [Record Review]

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!

Pretty cool new album from Mr. Cave and his Bad Seeds. It goes on with much of the same vibe found on the "Grinderman"[2007] album, and that is no bad thing in my book, since I've really come to like the "Grinderman" album a lot.

The new album is noisy, mostly guitar driven, and with The Bad Seeds rocking the best they can, while moving from weird minimalism to chaotic blasts like they always do. It is a fantastic band that often makes you wonder what the hell they are up to, just to prove that they know exactly how to take a song to a higher level.

I like Nick Cave very much in the rock mood or mode found on the new album, so for my part I wouldn't mind if he stayed there for quite a while. Rumor has it that a "Grinderman 2" album could become reality. I wouldn't mind that either.

I haven't really had the time yet to dig into the 58 page lyrics book that comes with the cd, but I am sure that Nick Cave has managed to squeeze in a few jokes in his lyrics. After all he is a bit of a wizard with words. Just like the Bad Seeds are wizards with their instruments.

Instant favorites of mine would probably be "We Call Upon The Author", "Lie Down Here (& Be My Girl)" and "More News From Nowhere". But it is really too early to rule any songs out, and many of the slower songs like "Hold On To Yourself" and "Jesus Of The Moon" sounds a lot like the slower tracks on "Abattoir Blues/The Lyre Of Orpheus"[2004], and that is no bad thing at all. In fact I think I like most of "Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!" in one way or another, so there really isn't any point in highlighting a few songs and forgetting the rest.

With "Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!" in my cd player I'll look forward to the upcoming Nick Cave gig this spring here in Copenhagen.
