I really liked Miley's previous album "Endless Summer Vacation" [2023] and I find her new album "Something Beautiful" just as great and probably even better. It doesn't have that "Flowers" #1 hit of course, but it has a lot of other qualities. It is still very much a pop-record but it is also more experimental. You can clearly hear elements that sound like her awesome "Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz" [2015] download-only album. Miley is not afraid to try alternative stuff and her voice is simply out-standing.''
"But the beauty one finds alone
is a prayer that longs to be shared"
The record begins with a poem with background music and after that the songs simply melt together. It is sometimes difficult to hear when one song ends and a new one begins. Not because they sound the same but because they are mixed together really well. Sometimes 2 songs just melt together and a few times there are short instrumental preludes to bind them together. The album is consistently enjoyable and high quality and it demands many replays. It only gets better for every spin it gets. Only a few songs are not quite on par with the rest, but it doesn't break the flow.
"Angels are real, I see them coming
but they won't ever catch up if we're running"
The highlights would be:
- The amazing title track "Something Beautiful" that combines a ballad with distorted outbursts of pure energy. This song gets better every time. An instant Miley classic.
- "End of the World" sounds a lot like an ABBA song. It has clear hit potential.
- "More to Lose" is a great ballad where Miley really sings her heart out about a relationship that comes to an end.
- It's got soul and it's groovy. "Easy Lover" is another song with hit potential.
- "Golden Burning Sun" would also have worked well as a song on "Endless Summer Vacation".
- "Every Girl You've Ever Loved" (feat. Naomi Campbell) is 5:18 of what sounds like a full-blown 12" dance mix. It is a brilliant pop-song. It has great use of saxophone and classical strings and spoken words all mixed in. I would love a 10+ minutes extended remix!
"Looking for the one
but one is never enough
I'm every girl you've ever loved
I'm a little bit Angel, I'm a little bit Not"
Is it a perfect Miley album then? Perhaps not, but it comes close enough. If it was perfect, you wouldn't have to hope for an even better album next time, would you? I've come to enjoy a lot of the early Miley teen-pop, but she has matured a lot since then. Miley dares to experiment, to go her own ways and give her fans what she thinks they need and not always what they think they want. Miley still has the greatest voice in pop and is a guarantee for new quality pop-music, something that is a very rare thing these days. I'm looking forward to see her new music movie in the cinema later this Month.
