"Let the Right One In (Season 1)", Streaming, [2022]

I have really enjoyed watching this first season of "Let the Right One In". It is inspired by the "Let the Right One In" universe as known from the novel by John Ajvide Lindqvist and the Swedish and American movies that were made based on the novel. This new TV series is only inspired by the book so do not expect a 1:1 adaption, it is quite different.

We follow the girl Eleanor [Madison Taylor Baez] and her dad Mark [Demián Bichir]. Ellie has been 12 years old for the last 10 years, since she was bitten by a vampire. Her dad tries to shield her from being a monster and he does the killings for her and brings her blood so she can survive. Like in the book, Ellie gets a good friend Isaiah, who lives next door to her, and to complicate things Mark also gets close to Isaiah's mom Naomi, who works as a New York cop and as part of her job is investigating the mysterious murders happening throughout the city.

Mark has been looking for a cure for Ellie for all these years, and in a parallel storyline, we follow Peter, who is also a vampire, and his sister Claire, who is a scientist. She will do whatever it takes to find a cure for Peter, no matter how many monkeys or men that'll have to die in the process. At some point the two storylines inevitable cross each other and that brings new dangers and complications with it.

The show has a rather slow pacing, but the actors are really great and you actually get to care for the characters. Well, not for Claire who is a total über bitch, but that is great for the story too, giving you someone to hate. Being a vampire story spiced up with a mad scientist plot, the show obviously does contain some blood and violence, but don't expect a total bloodbath, it's not that kind of show. It has a lot of the atmosphere also found in the movies and it lets us dive into the everyday problems of having a vampire daughter in the family.

Many of the episodes end with a bit of a cliffhanger, including the very last episode of the season, and I really hope we will get a second season. Not only because of the cliffhanger, but mainly because I really think this show deserves it. I have been looking forward to a new episode every Monday and I have really enjoyed it from beginning to end. I wanna know what happens to Ellie, her dad, and their friends, and I want to see someone rip Claire's head off and smash it with a big hammer. :)

UPDATE: It comes as no real surprise that this show got the cancel hammer. It stinks that streaming companies have no patience whatsoever. This show was really great and it deserved at least one more season to try and wrap things up. It makes you wonder if it's really worth watching new shows since many of them will get cancelled anyway. This is one of many reasons why I've always preferred watching movies instead of streaming series.
