Lemmy is dead. Motörhead is dead. Rock 'n' roll is dead?

We had known it for years. The clock was ticking. Everybody knew it, Lemmy probably knew it more than anybody. Nothing lasts forever. Not even an immortal Rock God. Even though the light that burned twice as bright burned twice as long too, it still came to an end. Lemmy has left this miserable mud-ball planet after 70 years of duty. Too many of my heroes have done so recently. Gunnar Hansen aka Leatherface left us in November 2015. David Murray Brockie aka GWAR's Oderus Urungus left the planet in March 2014. You feel like an old man when all your heroes are dying around you.

"I always knew, the only way,
Is never live, beyond today,
They proved me right,
They proved me wrong,
But they could never last this long,
My life, my heart, black night, dark star, Capricorn."

Lemmy had been struggling for years. He was stubborn as fuck and a true fighter. Let's be honest though, a Motörhead live gig hasn't quite been what it used to be, for the last 5 years or so. But just the joy of being in the same room as the legend, to hear the immortal songs, to stare at that Marshall Stack with "Murder One" on top, to have your ears smashed in and to hear the same old jokes from Lemmy, was more than enough to make you smile for days.

No matter what I thought I knew, and how well I knew the end was near, I wasn't prepared for how hard it would hit me. I read the news at 5:00 this morning, spent a few minutes validating the truth of it, while tears slowly began to fill my eyes. It was a good thing I had to go to work today, because it made it possible to distract my thoughts a little, even though the constant Facebook feed frequently interupted my mind. I had more than a hard time trying to keep a poker face, while I sat there and felt sad and dead inside.

Lemmy was not just a singer and a bassist in a rock band. Lemmy was rock 'n' roll itself made out of flesh and bones. He was the real deal. There was nothing fake about him. He spoke the truth and he never compromised. He did it his way and he never gave a single fuck about what other people thought about that. So many bands have tried to copy that, but failed, because they were either fake or they compromised.

I feel like rock'n'roll died with Lemmy. I know it didn't, but in a way, it did. There will never be another like him again. They don't build them that way anymore. He was a wonderful dinosaur from a different time and age, and he will be remembered to the end of days. It looks like the cockroaches won the battle after all, but they always do, don't they?

"So you see, the only proof,
Of what you are is in the way you see the truth,
Don't be scared, live to win,
Although they're always gonna tell you it's a sin,
In the end, you're on your own,
And there is no-one that can stop you being alone, Stay Clean."

Motörhead's music will live on forever. You will never be forgotten. Thank you for everything.

R.I.P. LEMMY
