Really great Swedish movie by Tomas Alfredson. Before going to see this movie I felt it had some heavy odds against it: being Swedish and having 2 kids as main characters. With a few exceptions I'm not a great fan of Scandinavian movies and I am certainly not a fan of movies with kids taking over the screen. However, I did read a very positive review of this movie, so I decided to give it a chance. I am glad to say that I was not let down by the review. I've never read the book that the movie is based upon, so I can't compare the movie to it, and this review is only based on the movie.
It is a fantastic movie about a lonely boy named Oskar who's getting bullied at school. While Oskar dreams of fighting back, he doesn't have the power and doesn't dare to do so. He meets the mysterious girl Eli who moves in next door with her "father" (who turns out to be something quite different). Eli is just as lonely as Oskar and they become friends. Her "father" soon turns out to be a serial killer draining his victims of blood, while Eli turns out to have a great taste for drinking blood.
While the movie can be seen as a vampire movie, it is a lot more than that. It shows how the two lonely souls find friendship and strength, while they get attracted to each other. Some people may find parts of the movie a little disturbing, but I think most people will actually be very fascinated from beginning to end.
The two main characters (Kåre Hedebrant and Lina Leandersson) are doing excellent jobs, and it is perhaps the best acting I've ever seen by such young kids. The atmosphere and the vibe of the movie is dark and cold and threatening and creates a great wrapping for the story itself.
The ending is excellent as well and I won't reveal it here. I can only advice you to go and see this movie yourself, I'm quite sure you won't be disappointed. There is already talk of a US remake, but it is totally pointless. There is no way in hell any two other kids can outplay this excellent couple.
