I had a week left of my summer vacation and I wanted to do something more interesting than just lying on the couch watching Tour De France. I scanned the internet for a good match between great bands and great places to go and I ended up with the mix of Kate Clover and Hamburg.
I saw Kate Clover at Copenhagen's Beta venue last year. She did a great gig there and I knew I'd have to come back for more of her pop-punk sometime later. Unfortunately Copenhagen isn't included on the current EU/UK tour, good thing Hamburg is then. I've been to Hamburg several times before, but it's been 12 years since my last visit. What better reason to come back than to go and see Kate Clover playing in the Reeperbahn area of St. Pauli.
I warmed up with a short visit to Zum Goldenen Handschuh which is an authentic St. Pauli Kneipe that is well known from the movie "Der Goldene Handschuh" [2019] about the serial killer Fritz Honka. The pub still looks very much like it does in that movie.
Nochtwache turned out to be a great little place. Much similar to Copenhagen's Beta in fact. When I arrived we were only 3 guests so I got a bit worried if nobody would show up but all for no reason. We ended up being a nice little crowd in the venue and we all got a great concert from Kate and her 3 boys.
The band line-up was almost unchanged from Beta, only the bass-player had been replaced with a new guy. They were all still dressed in black suits. Kate was wearing a dress similar to the one on the tour-poster and in addition to singing she also played her guitar on most of the songs. Kate interacted a lot with the crowd as the band moved through the setlist of songs from her first and second albums. The setlist hadn't changed much from the Beta gig a year ago. A single new song had been added "Too Bad" and it fit in well with the rest of the lot. I don't think it has been made available anywhere yet, I haven't been able to find it.
The sound was great at Nochtwache. It was quite loud too. Perfect! I'll recommend this venue if you are ever in Hamburg and some cool band is playing there. It is close to Herbertstraße, so be prepared to get some interesting offers from nice young women when you leave the place and head for the S-train station.
Kate signed a copy of her first LP and did a selfie with me. I somehow managed to lose the LP on my way back to my hotel in a tragic hide-and-seek accident at the Hauptbahnhof. It's only rock and roll and I'll survive it. The main thing was that I made it to the gig and I already had a copy of the LP at home. I also managed to get the setlist from the stage, so it should be listed correct below.
Needless to say, I'll be ready for more Kate Clover the next time she comes around. Let's hope she includes Copenhagen again next time.
