"Jurassic World: Rebirth", Cinema, [2025]

If this was supposed to work as some sort of Jurassic reboot, then the reboot procedure failed. It is not quite as bad as the last "Jurassic World: Dominion" [2022] locusts movie, but it is not much/any better than the "Jurassic Park" 2nd and 3rd movies, and I clearly prefer the 2 first "Jurassic World" movies compared to this new one.

We get the usual list of characters: some more or less good guys/girls, a bad guy, a family with an annoying kid. We get a bunch of dinosaurs, some plain vanilla and some genetically engineered freako-saurs.

Plot: for idiotic reasons, dinos now only live near equator, in a no-go zone. Our protagonists obviously has to go there to collect some dino blood samples. Some of them are driven by money and some are driven by an evil amount of money. On the way they pick up a family on a wrecked boat. They get to the no-go zone and find out why it is a no-go zone.

The movie is MUCH too long. Especially the first parts drag ass. They could have left out the entire family sub-plot and saved us some time. The water-dinos are boring. They look like angry whales.

On the island we meet a lot of winged-dinos. They are more interesting than the water-dinos, but not much. Old Rexie gets to join the show, and she is always very welcome, but she doesn't really get enough to work with here.

There is also a hybrid or genetically modified mutant dino, Distortus Rex, that looks a bit like a Star Wars rancor cross-bred with the baby alien from "Alien: Resurrection" [1997]. Distortus Rex never really gets anything to work with either. The Indominus Rex and the Indoraptor were much more interesting hybrids in the earlier Jurassic World movies, and they were allowed to really shine on the big screen.

It is fascinating how little they managed to get out of this movie. The plot was weak and the dino action scenes were something we've seen done better before. Adding Scarlett Johansson to the cast didn't help either, she needs a much better story and dialogue to shine.

The movie does have some well-executed action scenes, but all the human characters are either idiotic, annoying, useless or just hard to give a fuck about. You only wait for the dinos to eat the worst of them. They are expendable meat. With the movie being PG-13, you know from the beginning that there are no real danger to the heroes.

It's hard to say if there is any hope for the Jurassic franchise. They could certainly start by hiring some better writers. If you ain't got a story to tell then why bother making a movie?
