Immortal - "Northern Chaos Gods", LP, [2018] [Record Review]

Immortal : "Northern Chaos Gods"

Album one after the departure of Abbath. It's not bad, it is however not like Immortal with Abbath either. In fact it's getting very difficult to define what Immortal really is these days. Below is a timeline of all things Immortal in recent years. "I" and Demonaz solo were more Viking than pure Immortal. Abbath solo was a mix of both. The new Immortal album is less Viking, but maybe only 80% Immortal.

Demonaz sounds perfectly fine on vocals, but it's like something is missing. You can't just remove someone as important as Abbath and expect a perfect machine to stay perfect. Abbath's biggest problem on his solo album was the drumming. Horgh is a fucking killer machine and cannot be replaced easily. Same with Abbath. You end up with something that is less than perfect.

I think all the solo or spin-off albums below are better than the new Immortal album. It's not a bad album, it's just not perfect. The previous album "All Shall Fall" was way better and will remain on my playlist for many years. This new one won't.

Best song? Easily the remake/remodelling/reboot of "Blashyrkh (Mighty Ravendark)". Now it's titled "Mighty Ravendark". It's an epic 9:14 song. It's probably more Viking than Immortal but it's still awesome. Buy the album for this song alone. The rest is okay, but it's more chaotic than godlike.

Immortal live without Abbath? Hmmm... I doubt it will rule much, but maybe I will be proven wrong, hit me!
