This new release is more psychedelic than the first album that was a garage rock album with great energy. Also it is quite experimental and Warren Ellis still makes some pretty weird shit on his instruments.
This album starts off well with Mickey Mouse And The Goodbye Man that rocks in a great way. The first single Heathen Child is not bad either. It is perhaps a pretty weird song, but it is never boring. Palaces of Montezuma is another song I like, it's got a pleasing melody and sounds like something that might as well have been released on a Bad Seeds album.
Unfortunately I'm not too impressed with the rest of the album. It's not exactly bad, it's just not on par with the first Grinderman album[2007] or with recent Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds output for that matter.
While I still look forward to seeing the boys live here in Copenhagen in late October and expect them to play a great gig, I have to admit that this release is somewhat disappointing, mainly because Nick Cave almost always releases output of very high quality and I don't think this album is anywhere near as good as his best work.
