I don't know, if we really needed another Frankenstein movie, but if we did, then at least it's a good thing, that it's a fine adaption of the story. I think it stays close enough to Mary Shelley's novel while adding or rewriting several events, and it is the best movie version I have seen. Director Guillermo del Toro knows his shit and the movie has beautiful images and a look and feel that fits the story well.
All the actors are great, particularly Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein, Jacob Elordi as the monster and Mia Goth as Elizabeth. There are some parts of the movie with Danish dialogue and even that doesn't fuck it up. Lars Mikkelsen does okay as Captain Anderson. Game of Thrones aficionados will most likely say something like "That's Tywin fookin' Lannister" or "That's Walder fookin' Frey" during the movie.
Most people know the story already and there isn't any surprises. There are a few quite gory scenes along the way and that explains the R-rating. The movie didn't blow me away though. I didn't really expect that either, because it's not very likely with a story that is so well-known and has been told so many times. It was however nice not to be disappointed either.
If you can accept a movie with a familiar story, a slowish pace, and a long runtime around 2½ hours, then it's a pretty good watch and certainly much better than most of the other crap that is available on Wokeflix.
