Evelyn Evelyn - "Evelyn Evelyn", CD, [2010] [Record Review]

Evelyn Evelyn - Evelyn Evelyn

An awesome collaboration between Amanda Palmer [Dresden Dolls] and Jason Webley, this concept album covers the tragic (fictive) story of the two Siamese twin sisters Evelyn Evelyn.

It is all done with a hilarious black humor and song titles like "You Only Want Me 'Cause You Want My Sister", "Have You Seen My Sister Evelyn?" and "Love Will Tear Us Apart" are all great examples, giving them a whole new meaning in the Evelyn Evelyn context. Musically it is not far from Amanda Palmer's punk-cabaret style with piano, ukulele, guitar and accordion all playing big roles.

The story is glued together thru various segues where the sisters tell the story of their lives which is quite amazing but also very tragic.

The Evelyn Evelyn project was first launched as the "Elephant Elephant" vinyl single in 2007. I haven't been able to find a copy of that record yet, but I've heard the accompanying cd and it is not particularly essential, if you've bought the full album. The album is much better.

The album has also been released as a double 10" colored vinyl album which is really cool. Also just recently, a graphic novel has been released, telling the sisters' story in pictures. It is a fine and beautiful book (in 2 parts) that basically tells the album's segues in pictures and words. It is a great companion to the album.
