This was only my second Duran Duran live concert. I saw them in 2005 at Roskilde Festival and I remember it as a nice experience. Question was, are they still able to throw a party here 20 years later in 2025? The short answer is yes. We had a great evening down memory lane and it looked as if a lot of the audience were there to experience the soundtrack of their youth.
I have never been an actual fan of Duran Duran but I've always really liked their first 3 albums and they are very much parts of the sound of the 1980s for me. Lucky for me the setlist included 5 songs from the debut album [1981] and 4 songs from their masterpiece album "Rio" [1982]. We got a single surprise with a fine performance of "New Moon on Monday" that replaced "The Reflex" as the only song from "Seven and the Ragged Tiger" [1983].
"The Wild Boys" [1984] is still able to get all people on the dance floor and we also got Duran Duran's great James Bond song "A View to a Kill" [1985]. The other half of the songs in the setlist were "newer" songs, which to me means songs that are older than 1985. Those are the Duran Duran songs that I don't really care much about. It was never boring though and the setlist had a nice flow mixing old and newer songs together.
It was easy to hear that they were playing live. These days you are always worried to get some ridiculous playback show. The sound quality was great and you could hear that Simon Le Bon still has enough of his voice intact. He was struggling a bit with a few parts but it wasn't a problem and it was nice to hear him sing the old favorites again. John Taylor is an important part of the band with his great bass playing. Unfortunately the bass was mixed way too low in the mix and that was a shame. Taylor's bass needs to be much more in your face on the early Duran Duran songs. The same thing could be said about the saxophone that was also mixed too low.
Duran Duran played for approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes and I think it was a perfect length. Not too short and not too long. I got the old hits I came for and I think it was a really fun evening at the Royal Arena. Duran Duran are still guarantee for a great pop party and they have the quality songs that never really get old.
