David Bowie - "The Next Day (deluxe edition)", CD, [2013] [Record Review]

David Bowie - The Next Day (deluxe edition)

I've had this album on repeat for more than 2 days now. The cover photo looks like a crappy white square placed on top of the "Heroes"[1977] album cover and as such it doesn't do much for me. I've never been any kind of fan of that Berlin era album anyway and I sorta kinda hate the new cover. Luckily for me then the connection between the Bowie Berlin albums and the new album is not that extreme compared to the connection between Cannibal Corpse and a dead virgin's entrails.

I've had a monster struggle with this new album. 10 years after his disappearance following problems of a heart attack and a lollypop in his alien eye, he now returns as what!? A legendary musician, of fucking course! But what is this new album made of? I had a very hard time figuring it out, listening to it. I am not a particularly big fan of David's voice on the Y2K+ records, but I totally loved it live with all of it's power at the "Reality" shows.

More importantly I loved everything about his voice on the "Ziggy"[1972] and "Aladdin"[1973] albums. My latest choice of a Bowie masterpiece album would be "Outside"[1995]. It is definitely a challenging album, but it quickly grabs you on way too many levels and it will never let you go. The new album won't do anything like that...to be honest.

After many hours of replays, I like the new album better now than I did to begin with. "You Feel So Lonely You Could Die" ? yeah...it is in fact more consistent than both "Heathen"[2002] and "Reality"[2003]. Those albums were much easier to approach, digest and swallow and thus it was easier to find some favorite songs on both of them. This new album is however a better album overall, if you decide to invest the time required (more than a day on repeat.)

The production is rather boring and I think it has a lot to do with why it takes so long for the album to open up to the listener. Bowie is not a young man anymore and there is nothing revolutionary about this album.

It is a good solid work though and if you give it enough time then you will come to like it. Trust me, I fought and I did. Personally, I still wish for an "Outside" - part II album. The awesomeness of the first "Outside" album desperately needs to be extended. You know you want to, David... You just know that you want to.

The deluxe edition means: 3 extra tracks. Get 'em get 'em not? Well, why not. There's even an extra Japanese track to catch. Good luck.
