This was my 10 billionth D-A-D concert. No, going to D-A-D gigs never gets boring, but sometimes you feel like you have seen it all before. These few months I've been to an amazing release party and meet-n-greet at Planetarium and then the insane 40th anniversary gig at Royal Arena. What can you expect from a Disneyland After Dark gig a few months later at Copenhagen's Forum? Forum is notoriously known to offer lousy sound and a lot of other bad things.
"'Coz I'm superplus furious
I've done it again"
Let's hammer the sound problems into the concrete floor first then. Forum is indeed a concrete bunker, but they had scaled down the concert area to half the size of the total area, and by using hanging carpets they had managed to make it sound surprisingly good. I had no complaints what-so-ever about the sound tonight. Both the support band and the main band sounded great. Well done indeed!
What makes these D-A-D gigs on the "Speed of Darkness" tour a little bit boring is that they are very predictable. The setlist has been the same every night. There are no crazy tricks on stage. It is a bit underwhelming that way. It just doesn't blow the seasoned D-A-D fan away. We've seen it a lot crazier before.
"I reach 50 when I count to 10"
Let's hear about the new songs then:
- God Prays To Man : great opener
- Speed of Darkness : terrible riff, Laust. Sounds like an amateur metal band.
- The Ghost : nice enough
- Crazy Wings : I love this song
- 1st, 2nd & 3rd : the drum solo kicks ass
- Keep That Mother Down : disappointing, I had expected it to work way better live.
- Strange Terrain : super lame song, fuck it
So did it all suck or did it actually Röck? Yeah, D-A-D always Röck. How can "Evil Twin" and "Everything Glows" ever suck? No, they can't. The old war-horses "Riding With Sue" and "Jihad" will keep me smiling 'till I die. Should they skip the never-ending guitar solo in that particular song? Hell yeah, they should.
"Ah, jihad, I'm getting mad
And there's no fuel left for the pilgrims"
Some notes I made during the gig:
- Jesper is relying more on Laust's vocals. For some songs, I wondered if it was Jesper or Laust doing the main vocals. "Crazy Wings" was one of those songs.
- Jacob is getting pretty skilled at 1980s dance routines
- BAEST did okay as support. The band played well enough, but the vocals sucked. I liked it better when Jesper joined them for one of their last songs.
