The movie starts well enough. Iris (Sophie Thatcher) doesn't know that she is a robot, rented by her boyfriend Josh (Jack Quaid). She thinks she is a real person while in reality she is an emotional companion, an advanced fuckbot, or a walking cum sock. Choose your favorite description. Josh controls "Beep Boop", as he calls her, with an app on his phone.
It could all have been great and interesting, but the movie isn't a clever or intelligent sci-fi movie like "Ex Machina" [2014] or the HBO "Westworld" TV-series [2016–2022]. Far from it in fact. It is a thriller with a thin plot and some kills that are mostly unsatisfying. Don't expect over the top gore here. Don't expect any sex either. In fact, just don't expect too much. At least the movie has a bit of humor. The runtime and the pace is okay too.
Iris and Josh go on a weekend trip to visit a very rich Russian cliché, Sergey (Rupert Friend), who is dating one of Josh's friends, Kat (Megan Suri). Luckily Kat is black, checkbox checked. Also present is another of Josh's friends, Eli [Harvey Guillén] and his boyfriend, Patrick [Lukas Gage]. Gaybox also checked.
Pretty early on, Siri kills Sergey after he tries to rape her. Perhaps he took the fuckbot label a bit too literally... Anyway, the kill unleashes the thriller part of the movie. Siri becomes self-aware and tries to escape, while the rest of them tries to eliminate her and steal Sergey's money. That pretty much covers the plot.
Sophie Thatcher is a great young actress. She just needs to star in movies with better writers. She was great in "Heretic" [2024], but the movie wasn't that great. She is also great in this new robot movie "Companion", but again the movie just didn't impress me much. I haven't given up on Sophie Thatcher's career though, I'm sure she'll eventually star in a great movie, "Companion" just isn't that movie.
