Call of Duty: Black Ops [Game Review]

Call of Duty: Black Ops

I downloaded this game on the day of release but maybe I shouldn't have done so. Here's what I encountered during the single player campaign (which btw. only took me a good long day to play through from beginning to end):

  • 1 blue screen of death
  • 1 freeze (I managed to get out of the game using task manager)
  • 2 deadlocks (unsolvable mission objectives, had to restart the level)
  • 1 black screen (sound only) situation, had to restart level 3 times to get past

It really needs a patch before players should buy it. It seems that it just hasn't been tested well enough.

The game has great graphics and some good levels with a great pace and breathtaking action. The story takes place during the cold war and we get to visit Russia, Cuba, Vietnam, USA and the Arctic Circle. There is however way too much talking and background story. It's like watching a slow movie at times with none or very limited interaction. The story in itself is okay, there's just too much movie mode and too little game mode. You don't buy a 1st person shooter to listen to people's blah blah. You buy it to shoot people in the head and to blow stuff up - constantly!

Yes, there is a zombie mode as well, although I found it rather stupid and I think it looks more like a joke than anything else.

I'm not really interested in multiplayer games, so I can't say anything about it. Some people however claim it ain't running too well (lots of lagging.)

The game runs very nicely on an i7 2.66 GHz CPU + Geforce 285 graphics card at a 1920x1080 resolution. No problems at all and nothing slowing down at any point, no matter how many moving objects.

The short conclusion is that Modern Warfare 1 and 2 are much better games from a single player point of view. So if you haven't played those already, then do so instead.
