Last night's Bob Wayne concert here in Copenhagen was my 10th Bob Wayne anniversary gig. I saw him first time as support for Hank III @ Copenhagen's Vega in 2009. 10 gigs in 17 years is a good number. Some gigs have been solo gigs, but most of them with a full band. What is always the same is the great music, a great performance and a lot of fun.
Bob Wayne always talks a lot in between his songs, there's a lot of Hell Yeahs and truck air horn imitations. He's got a really fancy Italian band featuring double bass, drums and guitar. They sound like a real unit and provide perfect backing for Bob. The guitarist really impressed me last night, he sure knows his shit! Bob Wayne concerts always have a floating ever-changing setlist and you never know when an audience request will change everything around. I don't think I have ever seen Bob Wayne say no to a song request and he's written quite a few songs over the years to choose from.
I had expected the setlist to feature several songs from the "Tombstone Opera" [2025] album he did last year with James Woods. It didn't. Actually we only got one of those songs "Coyote Hanging on a Barbed Wire Fence" and it was by audience request, and was played just before the last song that always closes the set, "Spread My Ashes on the Highway". Instead we got a lot of songs from "13 More Truckin' Songs" [2025] which is a really fine album. Bob has been playing those songs live for years now and they sound great live. I heard many of them first time at Loppen in 2023 and they have stayed in the setlist since. The drummer and Bob sang "Psycho-Trucker" as a duet.
Obviously we also got a lot of his older songs, and it is always a joy to get a tour through the many great Bob Wayne songs. We got "20 Miles to Juarez" and I didn't even have to ask for it this time. I guess I've asked for it so many times before, that he'll always play it in Copenhagen now. When he played "Workin' Man" he also referenced the Hank III gig where he played in Copenhagen for the first time. I asked Bob after the show, and he confirmed that Hank III is doing fine. Good to know! (I still wish that he'd start playing live gigs again.)
10 gigs and counting. Who says we can't make it 20? Let's give it a try, Bob! After the gig I got the traditional selfie with Bob. I also got an autographed copy of the "13 More Truckin' Songs" LP, and the super friendly merch dude had secured me a t-shirt. It had been a very hot evening in more ways than one at a sold-out RĂ¥huset. The sound is always great in there, but the air-conditioning is not. I have no idea how Bob and his boys got through 90 minutes on stage in that heat. Truckin' is a mighty tough job! Thanks for a great night in excellent company. See you next time!
