Bitter Ruin - "Waves", CD, [2013] [Record Review]

Bitter Ruin - Waves

Like a "Child in a Seacave" I was being "forced" into Bitter Ruin by the mighty Amanda Palmer. Amanda's been a major force on the alternative music scene and for me since I fell in love with her Dresden Dolls after "accidentally" catching their Roskilde Festival gig in 2005.

Bitter Ruin came on a lot later. When Amanda became a major solo/ band-act then BR were always the trusted support-band in the UK - especially for the London and Brighton area. The "Delilah" duet between Amanda and Georgia became legendary. It was impossible not to fall in love with this Brighton band.

In 2012 BR made an EP, "The Rocket Sessions", that showed the way forward. Up until then, I think a lot of people would pin-point them as the duo, who had made the insanely catchy song "Trust" from 2007.

Like Amanda before them, BR relied on "KickStarter.com" for funding their new album. It worked out very well and even if I was more than late in the run, luckily I got my copy.

The problem describing Bitter Ruin's music is that it is like nothing else you'd normally hear out there. Georgia Train has the most amazing voice in town. She is partly like a Kate Bush but also with a lot of different vocal qualities. She is totally unbelievable. Even if this new album is brilliant, it doesn't really do her enough justice. Live she'll just blow you far away.

Ben completes the duo with his acoustic guitar and piano playing. He is the music-man and he also lends a full vocal on e.g. "Anchor Of Us" and several other songs. "Diggers" is a nice kick-ass single. Bitter Ruin is all very flamboyant, very theatrical, and I guess, much too much for some people. For others (like me) their music is truly awesome.

"A Brand New Me" should blow you away. If not, then check out the video for "Love Gone Left" below. Repeat until success. Shouldn't take long.

The official album release is a bit different than the Kickstarter release. But don't you worry, all the best songs are there and you'll love it to death. It is totally unique and nothing like the boring shit your friends are streaming. This is real music.
