This new movie created a lot of internet hype and it got some really good reviews. Off to the cinema. Was it worth it then? Not really. I am sure there is a lot to analyze for psychologists and psychiatrists, but it just wasn't a movie for me.
The idea is that there are some hidden "backrooms" in this world that you can enter if you find a hidden door. Both protagonists, Clark [Chiwetel Ejiofor] and Mary [Renate Reinsve], suffer from traumas, and I guess that's what makes it possible for them to find a door. I won't reveal what they find behind the door except for a lot of yellow hallways and yellow rooms. There is a whole new world to explore in there.
The movie is never really scary, it's just very weird. You are left with a bunch of questions and mysteries as the puzzle unfolds. The "backrooms" world is certainly mysterious enough to be interesting, and the atmosphere is pretty threatening. It's just not enough to carry an entire movie. Especially not when you don't feel you get any conclusions or much explanation. The story is just being weird for the sake of being weird. I hear rumours of a potential sequel. I can already say that I'm gonna pass.
