Let's be honest. Those of us, who has been with the band for years now, has had great fears they'd crash on the big scene of Copenhagen's Vega. Calm down, they did not. Yes, some of the crowd were indie-types, and it's never a good thing for a punk-band to become mainsteam.
Amyl have almost made it to mainsteam hell. Several sold-out gigs at London's Roundhouse. Tonight they played a sold-out gig at Copenhagen's Vega. They have certainly moved far from when I first saw them at Gutter Island Festival and at a very small stage late night at Roskilde Festival. The freshest output from the band is "Cartoon Darkness" [2024]. It is not a great album. It sounds like something they released because they "had to" and not because they had a lot of great new songs ready.
Support band Party Dozen is a duo of drums and saxophone. Pretty strange line-up but they actually did alright. Perhaps not exactly a genre I would be into normally, but I think it could work great for a movie soundtrack or something. For a support band it was pretty good and interesting enough.
The main act kicked-off well with one of the better songs from the new album "Doing in Me Head" and it really kicked ass with "Control" and "Freaks to the Front". After that, they lost it all with the terrible "Chewing Gum", a total shit track from the new album. The rescue came with "Security" and "Some Mutts" that made the crowd explode in a massive pit around the front rows.
Amy is still energetic as fuck, dancing around like a rabbit on speed. Only she is clearly not out of control. If she was then she wouldn't have lasted this long. Her voice is 100% intact and you still can't understand her fucked-up Aussie accent. All is perfect. Including the band. "Guided by Angels" got us back on track. They really rock when they take the time to write great songs. Could I have done without the guitar solo in "Big Dreams" ?, the answer is yes, but let's face it, the band think they have to evolve and shit, and as long as they don't include a drum solo, we are good.
Their previous album "Comfort To Me" [2021] was a hell of a lot better than the new album. We got several songs from that one and those songs really shined, including the sole encore song: "Maggot". Another day at the office for Amy and her boys? Probably. At least they still look like they are having some fun doing it up there, and it would only be fair if they actually begin to see some income from all their hard work.
Copenhagen's Vega is always guarantee for top quality sound. Tonight's gig was no different. I always want it to be louder of course, but that's just the Motörhead in me.
I hope this band have more in them than their weak latest release "Cartoon Darkness". They are a great live band, and even if I liked them better when "nobody" knew who the fuck they were, It would be great if they'll keep on going. Take your time next time and write some great songs for the next album though. Then I'd love to come back for more of that Aussie punk-rock thing.
