Alita: Battle Angel (2D) [2019]

This is a movie adaption of a Japanese cyberpunk manga series "Gunnm" created by Yukito Kishiro. It was directed by Robert Rodriguez, but a certain James Cameron has also been involved as screenplay writer and producer.

The story is set in the future after some great war has laid most of the Earth to waste. Iron City is where the story takes place and above it floats the mysterious sky city Zalem. A cyborg repair doctor, Dyson Ido [Christoph Waltz], finds Alita on the junkyard and he rebuilds her and brings her back to life. She can't remember a thing except for some old cyborg martial art called Panzer Kunst, skills that makes her a very powerful weapon.

The movie has a fine pace and some great visuals and impressive CGI. Particularly the cyborg fights and the futuristic sport called Motorball is a sight to see, maybe even worth going 3D for. It is not exactly a deep or thoughtful movie and it does lack some darkness to balance it off. Alita [Rosa Salazar] with huge manga eyes is easy to like, her being all naive to begin with and then becoming this deadly warrior again, that she was in the past. The teenage love story with Hugo [Keean Johnson] doesn't do much good, but I guess it could have been worse.

It doesn't take a cybernetics doctor's degree to figure out that she'll get the hi-tech combat body and she'll also get the special fighting sword from the evil cyborg Zapan [Ed Skrein].

The movie very much builds up to a sequel, and if it actually happens and they keep the same production quality, then I'll surely be watching that one too. We need to find out if Alita ever makes it to the floating sky city and brings it down from the inside.
