AC/DC @ Parken, Copenhagen, 2009-06-19 [Concert Review]

AC/DC - Live @ Parken, Copenhagen, 2009-06-19

This gig was anticipated by all true rock freaks in Denmark, since the guys from down-under hadn't paid us a visit for far too many years. Last time I saw AC/DC live dates back to April 1996 when they visited Copenhagen's Forum.

The show was really impressive with the giant Rock'n'Roll steam locomotive on stage and all the usual AC/DC effects including Hell's Bell and the cannons. The massive Rosie doll looked really cool on top of the locomotive.

The setlist is pretty much a selection of greatest hits but with AC/DC the setlist is not so important, really. They have generally created one or two basic songs that they play in different versions. Nothing wrong with that since they are really great rock'n'roll songs and they play them very well. Also Angus Young is a skilled guitarist and he does a lot of cool things.

Angus and Brian still have an amazing amount of energy and Angus runs around constantly with his trademark duck walk. The rest of the band: drums, bass and rhythm guitar is ridiculously anonymous. You could basically replace them with a drum machine and a minidisc and nobody would even notice. They do their jobs very well no doubt about it, but they are hardly part of the show at all.

The crowd in the sold out stadium was really into it and it was a very cool sight to watch the fans out there with lots of flashing plastic devil horns (DKK 100) with everybody having a great time. I learned that AC/DC must have a massive amount of fans in Jutland since I met an enormous amount of incredibly drunk Jyder.

Parken once again excelled in a demonstration of a logistic nightmare, so that it took forever to enter and leave the stadium and it was practically impossible to buy a beer, since you would have missed most of the gig if you'd even attempted that.

I guess AC/DC deserves five stars since they pretty much did what I expected them to do. They kickstarted one hell of a rock'n'roll party and then kept it going for most of the gig. If I compare the gig to the one I saw in 1996 then the 1996 gig was clearly the best. Maybe it was because they were younger, maybe my memory just fails me. It's quite some years ago and sometimes things in the days of way back just stands out as better just because it happened so many years ago. No matter what, it was a great Friday night and AC/DC is always guarantee for a great party and some good music.
