It is always a matter of your personal taste if you like the festival line-up or not. However it is a fact that this year's lineup once again brings up several names that has been there several times in recent years or even last year. It is also a fact that hard rock and heavy metal is barely represented by any bands with a massive weight and reputation.
If you look at the bands touring Europe in early July and if you compare to what some of the other major festivals have lined up then you must wonder what the hell is wrong with Roskilde's bookers.
The problem with Roskilde is that they have transformed it from a rock'n'roll festival into something that seems more like an amusement park. Way too many activities have nothing to do with a music festival and way too many of the bands/artists performing are utter shite. The focus is way too much on one-hit MTV wonders, old half-dead dinosaurs, lame worldmusic and soft-pop. Rikke Øxner and her bookers have proven themselves completely incompetent.
While some of these bands may be interesting: Beastie Boys, Björk, DataRock, Eagles of Death Metal, Mastodon, In Flames, Machine Head, Queens of the Stone Age, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Sounds, Arctic Monkeys, Hayseed Dixie
it is by no definition a killer lineup.
Bands like: Motörhead, Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson, Metallica, Immortal
should have been booked this year. There is no valid excuses as to why they were not.
For the record I made my first visit to Roskilde Festival in 1994. I have been there 11 times since. I may even consider going there this year. But it won't be with much hope for great music. It will be mostly for the purpose of drinking beers and having fun with new and old friends.
Shame on Roskilde for presenting the worst lineup ever. Even with a few late additions it seems impossible to make it much better than rather lousy.
