I had hoped my Die Hard t-shirt would somehow magically have transformed this one into a good movie. When I learned that the cinema's popcorn machine had died hard on them I knew the t-shirt probably wouldn't help me much. It seems that most of the reviewers and many users of IMDb don't have much love for this 5th Die Hard movie which takes John McClane to Moscow and Chernobyl. After today's visit to the cinema I can now join the club. This movie sucks.
The dialogue is weak. The humor is not funny - at all. The actors are weak. Not even Bruce Willis is up to his usual standard and John McClane has lost almost all of his charm and humor here. All the Russians are stereotypical and uninteresting bad guys. John McClane's son Jack is played by Jai Courtney who does an awful job. The chemistry between Jack and John is nonexistent. It feels completely awkward and unbelievable.
All of this could probably have been partly ignored if the action scenes had been great enough. Unfortunately they are not. It is a mix of "Michael Bay - let's blow up everything" style mixed with annoying hand-held shaky-cams like they are used in the disaster of a movie "World Invasion: Battle Los Angeles". All the action scenes are shot from lots of angles and the view is shifted constantly and rapidly between them just to make absolutely sure that the entire audience will leave the cinema feeling dizzy and with a headache. Oh, and don't forget to add a massively annoying soundtrack to complete the fun.
The 4th Die Hard movie surely wasn't perfect, but at least it was entertaining and had many moments of fun. This 5th Die Hard movie doesn't even feel like a Die Hard movie. It is just a rather lousy action movie that happens to have Bruce Willis in it. I have no idea why he agreed to star in this crap though.
