I had hoped that some of the reviews were wrong, but unfortunately they weren't. This is not a great movie although it isn't a disaster either.
It is a total standard good cops vs. bad gangsters movie and not even great actors like Sean Penn and Josh Brolin can save the movie from drowning in long gun fights and clichés. But Los Angeles in 1949 certainly looks great on the big screen.
The story is totally straight forward and contains no surprises whatsoever. Also there is no reason to be afraid of the violence it contains. It is all old school and rather toned down.
I had expected more from the director of Zombieland, but at least Gangster Squad was never boring. It was just not what it could have been or what I had expected it to be.
