Amanda Palmer @ Heaven, Under The Aches, London, 2011-09-02 [Concert Review]

Amanda Palmer - Heaven, London - England - Live - 2011-09-02

...arrived early at the Heaven concert venue and found that there was already a long queue of Amanda Palmer fans waiting to get in. I decided to go to a pub on the other side of the street, allowing me to sit down and drink some lovely beers, while at the same time being able to see when the doors were opened.

Once we were let in to the rather large venue (which apparently and according to Amanda was being used as a gay bar on most weekdays), I had no difficulty both getting some drinks and finding a nice spot near the front on the right hand side, so I wouldn't get kicked too much around once the gig started and I began filming.

The setlist was pretty similar to the day before in Brighton, but the difference being that there were a lot of support bands and guests. Although the concert the natural flow of the concert was constantly being interrupted by guests (some certainly more interesting than others) entering the stage and joining the show in various ways. The best way to describe the gig is messy and unstructured and compared to the Brighton gig, then the Brighton gig was a lot better. It was much more consistent, uninterrupted and more intimate. All that said, the London crowd was excellent and very much into it.

Amanda and the band played 4 new songs and several of them were great, so I hope she will release at least some of them in one form or another. Bitter Ruin is best remembered for their awesome performance together with Amanda and band on "Delilah" (it was even greater than in Brighton), and The Jane Austen Argument was actually really cool. It was also great to have some horn backing on a few songs, something that didn't happen in Brighton. I could very well have done without the crowd invasion on stage though. Just another interruption destroying the flow.

All in all it was a great evening, but I couldn't help feeling slightly disappointed when I made my way back to the hotel, because the London gig was nowhere in the same league as the one in Brighton. I'm sure than people who only saw the London gig will think it was really great, but that's only because they hadn't experienced an awesome Amanda Palmer gig the day before.

I filmed most of the gig, but was running low on batteries near the end, so I had to be a bit selective. Anyway, I've shared some of my video recordings below on YouTube. Again, Amanda didn't want the new songs on YouTube, and I think I should do what she asks.
