Prince @ 10'øren (amager strandpark), Copenhagen, 2011-08-07 [Concert Review]

Prince - NPG Festival, Copenhagen - Denmark - Live - 2011-08-07

For the second day of the NPG Festival we had VIP tickets which proved to be rather crappy compared to the VIP lounge tickets we had the day before. Our tickets included the same things as the lounge tickets but excluding dinner and excluding the option to sit on the benches. Also the VIP bar and toilets were located at the opposite side of the stage where the sound wasn't very good. As a result we spent most of the time away from the VIP area.

Support bands included: Chaka Khan, Janelle Monáe and Nikka Costa and more. Janelle Monáe was a good experience and she had an entertaining stage show. She is clearly best in her up-tempo songs while the slower material are more mediocre. I've bought her newest album afterwards and it is pretty good. Prince showed up on stage for a brief moment during her gig, something he repeated during Chaka Khan's gig.

Prince's gig started out with a cool 20 minutes long funk jam which included Prince on both drums, bass, guitar and keyboard. It also featured Larry Graham on bass including a bass duel between him and Prince. Ida Nielsen took care of Prince's guitar while Prince spanked the bass.

Saturday's show featured most of the supporting artists on stage from time to time, and it was clear that Prince wanted to make up for the aborted show the day before. The inner circle was much less crowded this evening, so we got very great spots near the stage, something that gave me the option to shoot some pretty good photos. All in all it was a perfect evening ending a really great Prince festival at Amager. Prince threatened to make it a repeat annual experience and we surely wouldn't mind that at all!

Prince announced an after show at Amager Bio after the gig. We chose to pass, since we were very tired. It turned out to be a clever decision since the after show was mainly performed by the supporting artists and only saw Prince join for a few minutes.

Line-up:

  • Prince - whatever
  • John Blackwell - drums
  • Cassandra O'Neal - keyboards
  • Morris Hayes - keyboards
  • Ida Nielsen - bass
  • Shelby J. - vox
  • Andy Allo - vox (guitar)
  • Marva King - vox
