The making of this movie ran into problems when Sid Haig got ill and then sadly died. It was complicated enough to begin with. How could you make a sequel to "The Devil's Rejects" [2005] when they all died in a rain of bullets, or did they? Also Rob Zombie's movie "31" [2016] was a pile of shit. Would this new movie also be a pile of shit? Lots of things to be worried about.
Well, they did in fact survive the bullet rain. Exactly how is not explained in finer details, but it's a bit of a hellish miracle. For obvious reasons Sid Haig's "Captain Spaulding" character doesn't get much screen time, but it was very nice to see him anyway. It wouldn't have felt right without him.
Otis Driftwood [Bill Moseley] gets a lot more screen time, but it is a somewhat changed Otis we see here. He is more laid back and just wants to chill. Well, at least after he manages to escape the prison with the help from his half-brother Winslow Foxworth "Foxy" Coltrane [Richard Brake]. Together they must come up with a "plan" to get Baby Firefly [Sheri Moon Zombie] out of the prison, so they can be together as a happy family of killers and get fucked up again and do some more fucked up shit.
Baby has changed a lot as well during her 10 years in prison. She's become a total psycho, not that she was calm and quiet before, but now she is real psycho. I think Sheri does a really great job with the Baby character. She has by far the best scenes in the movie.
It's not an intellectual or deep movie and the plot is not exactly complex or without holes. Well, you didn't expect that, did you? I think it works quite well. It is a fine end to the "trilogy" that began with "House of 1000 Corpses" [2003]. There is a fair amount of violence and gore and nudity, and I don't think the pathetic British Board of Film Classification has even messed with the version I saw.
The main characters are great and it all stays true to the movies that came before it. Considering how shitty "31" was, I am really happy that this movie doesn't suck. I've watched it twice now and I liked it the second time too. The bluray also includes a "making of" feature.
