Martin Degville (Sputnik) - "The Prophet Of Freak", Download, [2009] [Record Review]

Martin Degville - The Prophet Of Freak

It's been a long wait for this brand new Martin Degville (ex-Sigue Sigue Sputnik) release The Prophet Of Freak. Labeled as a Sci-Fi Superstars release being the name of Martin's new band also featuring guitarist Santi Lluch and bassist David Lluch.

It's been one hell of a long time since we had a real proper SSS release. Last Sigue Sigue Sputnik album release Ultra Real dates back to 2002 and Martin's last EP Smart1 was released in 2004. Since then only compilations and demo collections have fueled our need for something Sputnik. The big questions are: was it worth the wait and is it Sputnik? The quick answers are YES and YES.

The 3 demo collections Sputnik 2....The Future, G.O.D (guns oil drugs) and Space Age Junkie allowed us to follow the process all the way. The final product The Prophet Of Freak represents the best songs from these demo releases and contains several previously unreleased tracks as well. Most of the songs have been revamped and they all sound excellent and well produced and mastered.

I am really amazed how well I like almost all the songs on this new album. It is full of highlights like the title track, Fuck Off, the catchy I Surrender, Sputnik2 Express with the Jayne Mansfield inspired guitar riff, Sunday - I've Got Monday On My Mind with it's pumping Sputnik bass and weird classical sample, Planit-Bi which is totally catchy - and this album version is as good as any previously released versions, Click On Me which I didn't really like as a demo - but now I simply love it, Natural Born Sinner heavily based upon the Gen-X Dancing With Myself guitar, I Wanna Be A Celebrity has been a sure hit from the first demo release, the closer Virtually Dreamin' which is presented in a fantastic acoustic version which is an awesome way to end a very satisfying and very Sputnik album.

The new album has it all: Sputnik sound, Sputnik guitars, Sputnik bass, Sputnik lyrics. I won't go into comparing it to the old Sigue Sigue Sputnik masterpieces, but it is certainly and truly a very Sputnik sounding release we virtually hold in our hands. Mission accomplished Prophet Degville, you've created a true Sputnik Freak of an album. Sputnik fans won't regret it if they choose to buy it!!!

The album holds a total of 15 tracks and you can see the full [Link removed] . As part of the download you will also receive a bonus track Space Oddity which is a cover of the old David Bowie song.

A note on the download process: The files are being delivered through MegaUpload.com and I had a few problems getting to the files, but eventually I succeeded. They are delivered as Wav files and with cover images as well. The Wav format is obviously the best sounding format, but it does require that you spend a little time converting the files to MP3 (or similar) and tagging the files, if you want to use them in your MP3-player or phone.

You can buy the album at Sputnik2.com, so what in Sputnik's name are you waiting for? And don't forget to read about the launch gig in London while you're there, it's gonna be a blast!
