Kiss - Forum - Copenhagen - 2008-06-03 - Live

I really wanted to be positive going to this KISS gig, my first one ever. But seriously, it wasn't good. It more than anything showed that KISS has a hell of a lot of lousy songs. For long periods you just stood there wondering, how the hell can a band with 35 years of experience not have created better songs than that, and why the hell do they sing so bad.

It's not that they can't play. I know Eric Singer very well from Alice Cooper, Gene Simmons is just as iconic live as he is on tv and Paul Stanley is just as gay looking. And well, Tommy Thayer, who really cares? But the looks just isn't enough, really. Yes, the stage looks phenomenal covered in billions of lights and explosions, but it can't hide the fact that most of the music sucked. In fact only the last third or so of the concert showed that they have in fact written some damn great rock songs.

My compliments however for selling the entire show on a direct-from-soundboard 2cd that you could order before the show. Several other bands could learn from that! My compliments also to the never-ending line to collect them. Probably they are still standing in line waiting. I just skipped the line entirely in a bastard kinda-way and picked up mine.

Anyway, listening to the show afterwards didn't do much to change my mind. It is much of a "been-there-done-that" kinda thing. Yes, I've seen KISS. And yes, they said "Copenhagen" every other minute in the German pronunciation. But they are not a great live band. Not even with genuine gems like Detroit Rock City and Love Gun in the setlist. They are just a great live show (and they should seriously turn up the volume.)
