There is something quite charming about Horrorpops (Current lineup: Patricia, Nekroman, Niedermeier) and their image and looks are horribly cool. They used to play some great live gigs as well, back when they played in Copenhagen on a regular basis.
Patricia has an okay voice when the songs fit it. She doesn't sound too far from Gwen Stefani at times. On a few songs however her voice gets a bit annoying to listen to, but on the majority of tracks she sings well enough, the band plays very well indeed and the music is quite a mixed bag with references to psychobilly, punk and pop and to Madness, Blondie and Pretenders to name a few.
But with a lineup that includes Kim Nekroman, it is difficult - or impossible - not to compare them to Nekromantix. And it is a fact that I like the latest Nekromantix cd "Life is a GRAVE & I dig it!" from 2007 - and the rest of the Nekromantix albums really - better than Horrorpops.
The new Horrorpops album "Kiss Kiss Kill Kill" is however not bad at all. It is way better than the poor 2005 release "Bring It On!" and it is also better than their first album "Hell Yeah" from 2004. While "Hell Yeah" had the stunningly cool track "Where They Wander" that really fucking rocked, the new album doesn't have that one complete ass kicker of a track. It does however still have some great tunes. I guess the best of them are: "MissFit", "Boot2Boot", "Everything's Everything", "Highway 55", "Copenhagen Refugee" and "Private Hall Of Shame". All in all I find the new album enjoyable.
Now, if somebody could please persuade Kim and Patricia to visit Copenhagen for one hell of a combined gig sometime soon, then I would buy that somebody a large beer as a big thank you!
